5 Daggy 90s Songs you need to Listen to Immediately

e’re all quite nostalgic deep down in our little souls. I’m obviously a supporter of the minimalist, non-sentimental movement that’s sweeping the internet at the moment (de-clutter challenge anyone?) but even I can’t sit in silence when a merciful DJ plays a 90s one-hit-wonder.

The windows go down, the volume goes up and I go full Celine on that situation. I’ve been doing some research on daggy 90s songs and these are just about my top 5 favourites…

1. Baby I Love Your Way – Big Mountain

This song is begging to be listened to in the shower. The next time you need to shave your legs or wash your hair pop this bad boy on in the background – it will make the time fly by.

2. What’s Up – 4 Non Blondes

This one is a definite listen-to-it-in-the-car-with-a-Slurpee kind of song. It’s also a good group song. Singing the ‘Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah…’ bit always sounds better if you have someone else to yell it with.

3. Breakfast At Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something

The ultimate break up song. It’s an amazing thing to listen to when you know you’re holding on to something that’s over but you just can’t quite let it go. But you’ll always have Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

4. Sex and Candy – Marcy Playground

This was the ‘naughty’ song back in the day. My five year old niece is obsessed with the song Shut Up and Dance with Me and she always whispers the ‘shut up’ part because it’s rude. I can remember singing this song in grade seven simply so I could say the world ‘sex’. Some things never change.

5. Bitch – Meredith Brooks

Similar to Sex and Candy, Meredith Brooks’ Bitch existed purely so we could loudly scream ‘I’m a bitch, I’m a lover, I’m a child, I’m a mother…’ on the bus and no one could yell at us.

My awesome co-anchor at Sweet Teen Club (I’ve decided we’re co-anchors now like in Anchor Man. I LOVE LAMP!) Veggie Mama has put together an epic 90s one-hit-wonder playlist on Spotify and it’s the best thing that’s happened since Adore Beauty sent me a Tim Tam with latest purchase. Listen to this thing – it’s incredible.

The reason why she did this, is because this week we’re talking about 90s one-hit-wonders on Sweet Teen Club.

If you’re keen to listen to it here’s how you can do it –

What’s your most favourite song from the 90s? You know that one that has you bolting to the dance floor? Or cranking the stereo in your car?

I was listening to 90s music the other night (I blast music to stop me from wanting to die rather than do the dishes in the evening when I’m tired and over it haha) and oh, the nostalgia!! Great song choices! I like to belt out anything from Alanis’ Jagged Little Pill personally! I did not know a single household that didn’t have that CD when I was growing up!!

I’m so in to Alanis, it’s not even funny. It’s my standard break up album. If one of my mates has a break up I’m there with beer and Alanis in a heart beat.

  2. I have too many 90’s songs which I love, but a few are: Place Your Hands by Reef, Barbie Girl by Aqua, When I Grow Up by Garbage, Wanna Be by Spice Girls and Backstreets Back by the Backstreet Boys – these are all sing-a-long songs and get played loud.

I LOVED Place your hands – I totally forgot about it and you just reminded me. So awesome. The rest of your list is also amazing.

I love “Baby I love your way” so bloody much I walked down the isle to it a couple of months ago…. haha

I should add it was a live “version of” … not Big Mountain blaring from the speakers 😛

You’re kidding? That’s amazing! I love it when people pick different and awesome songs for weddings. For my imaginary wedding I wanted to have That’s All I Ask Of You from Phantom of the Opera but bloody Jessica Wakefield stole it from me in Sweet Valley Confidential when she married Elizabeth’s ex Todd. What a bitch.

  4. “What’s Up?” isn’t daggy!! It’s awesome! The 90s are my glory days of music so there’s no way I could narrow it down to one favourite, maybe one hundred. If we’re talking daggy 90s one-hit wonder singalongs, we definitely need “To Be With You” by Mr Big, “You Don’t Treat Me No Good No More” by Sonia Dada, “Would I Lie To You” by Charles and Eddie, “Life Is A Highway” by Tom Cochrane, “Joey” by Concrete Blonde, “No Rain” by Blind Melon and “Tubthumping” by Chumbawumba.

Oh it’s totally daggy! There’s no way the cool kids would be listening to it these days! I adore Mr Big! I think we need to periscope a sing along to it!

I maintain it’s still the greatest one-hit wonder playlist of all time. OF ALL TIME.

    Once I remove Sucker DJ.

I was going to say ‘Freedom’ by Wham (gets me out of a funk every. single. time.) but I realise that’s probably an 80’s song…. But it was the first song I danced to with my first serious boyfriend… and that was in the 90’s ?

    • Claire 8 years ago

That ? was supposed to be 😉

I think that is an 80s song actually but we’re not too hardcore about that. We’re 80s kids too!
