Three Items Every Man Should Own

by Carly Jacobs

The Grey Knit

As a staple in any wardrobe, the grey knit is timeless throughout the seasons and can work wonderfully with any outfit, treading the line between casual and smart depending on what it’s combined with.

The Checked Shirt

The checked shirt, which was once the preserve of lumberjacks and punks, has been on-trend for two or three years and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere – especially with new designs gracing shop shelves each year!

The Tan Boots

While they are certainly flexible, tan boots are a fashion must that should be paired with certain things in particular to get the best look. Women should look to skirts, while men should opt for darker clothing on their bottom half to provide marked contrast.

Do you ever confront people? Or do you suffer in silence?

by Carly Jacobs

Scream

I have what Mamma Smaggle would call a ‘strong personality’. It’s a nice way of saying I’m a bitch. How I managed to get this reputation is completely beyond me but it’s probably justifiable because she’s not the only person who thinks this. I often have friends saying they don’t stick up for themselves like I do for myself. Which I have to say is absolute bollocks. I never really stick up for myself.

If you give me a couple of glasses of red and start talking crap about something that I believe in passionately in like legalising gay marriage or child protection laws then yes you are completely screwed. I’m very quick, very cutting and I never argue unless I’m right. Let that be a lesson to you all.

If someone attacks me personally though I’m very unlikely to retaliate. I’m a bit of a bunny rabbit like that. People either love me, or loathe me. Which is fine because I’d rather have someone hate me than feel indifference towards me, but unfortunately those that do loathe me are pretty hideous and take my ‘strong personality’ as an excuse to take me down.

When an attack is personal, I suffer in silence. It’s a form of self-preservation. I can’t explain it except to say that I can only argue with people who have a valid point. Bullies never do. In fact I’m far more likely to defend a personal attack on a friend than myself.

What do you do? If you are personally confronted do you attack back? Or retreat?

P.S I also LOVE being sickly sweet to people who don’t like me. It’s delicious.

LMFF Menswear Runway

by Carly Jacobs

The LMFF Menswear Runway was by far my favourite show of the season. I don’t know whether it was the excitement of my first show of the year, the rad dancers that bookended each collection or the fact that I was sitting directly opposite Josh Thomas, Alex Perry and Melissa George. I had a major Angel from Home and Away fixation when I was in primary school and I literally started eating Vegemite because I saw Angel eat it once. True story. She is stunning, and lovely and lively. It made my night… or possibly ruined it because I spent most of the evening staring at her. Anyway, on to the fashion!

Alpha60

Loving the monochrome base with geometric patterned breaks in the design. I love their playful twist on the argyle sweater.

Arthur Galan

This was one of the labels that really raised my eyebrows. I’ve never seen pants tucked into boots look so damn sexy. I’m also fond of the giant circular scarf and the return of the chino. More young men should wear chinos.

Autonomy

This label was also a huge favourite of mine. It felt very French with boat necked striped t-shirts and their subtle use of navy. Any of their coats would be divine on Mr Smaggle. Oh and what’s this? Shoes and no socks? I have a feeling someone wrote about this recently

Campaign

While I applaud the concept of boots over pants I feel that Campaign’s effort is unflattering and inferior to Arthur Galan’s collection. Having said that there was some excellent outer wear happening with tailored coats and more relaxed jackets.

Farage

I would love to write about Farage with unbiased eyes but nothing undoes me more than skinny boys in suits. It’s my major weakness. Putting my lust aside though, the dark blue pinstripe is gorgeous and paring it with brown dress shoes was genius.

From Britten

I really liked this collection with its quirky twists on standard items, like the wrap suit jacket and the dress pants tucked into socks. Rollnecks on men are exquisite and I’m pleased to see them making a return.

Three Over One

This one copped some bad talk at the bar after the show but I thought it was quite fresh and cheeky. What’s not to love about dessert boots, rope belts and navy?

Vanishing Elephant

Sadly V.E did not get my vote this year. I thought the cut of their pants was unflattering and the whole collection felt like it was lifted straight from an indie-film hipster.

I also got to see the beautiful Helena Christensen walk. The fash pack were beside themselves before the show about seeing her and I was confused as to why it’s so amazing to see a person walk. Isn’t it about the fashion? Well my friends I was proven wrong. I didn’t realise that a person could be so good at that. She was simply and bizarrely breathtaking.

How did you feel about Menswear this year? If you are a guy, would you wear any of these ensembles? Ladies? Could you see your man in anything from Menswear?

Daily Style – Slow morning…

by Carly Jacobs

redtightsredjacket

Having a slow day… we got the morning off school because we had a fundraising jewellery auction last night. I was delighted that someone other than Co-Dependant Smaggle bid on my piece. Three people in fact. The girl that won them put them on straight away… it was pretty cool.

* Red tights from Myer
* Dress from Tree of Life
* Doc Marten shoes from DFO
* Men’s watch from Fossil
* Necklace by Roomy Smaggle

Off to the workshop for the afternoon and then having a studio warming dinner for Roomy.

Can I get a consensus? Do you wear/or not wear high heels because you are self conscious about your height?

by Carly Jacobs

My question to you is… do you torture yourself in heels everyday because you are self conscious about being short? Or do you clomp around in flats everyday so you don’t appear like a giant? Is height really a legitimate body quirk to get hung up over?

This is a rather personal question because at 5’8, I’m unusually tall and I do sometimes find myself avoiding wearing heels because I don’t want to look like a big foot. Which is ridiculous because being tall isn’t unattractive. Neither is being short. It’s just come to my attention recently that this is rather an odd thing to be uncomfortable with… especially seeing as it’s the one thing about your body that you can do nothing about.

What do you think?

Please let us know your height as well. I have a feeling the extreme gals will have a bit to say about this matter…

Daily style – Perfect Type A Day.

by Carly Jacobs

vanilla soft serve

This morning I got up, went straight to the gym, did my washing, cleaned the house, cleaned out my tool box, went shopping and did my homework. On days like this I want to kick my own arse for being such a nerd…

* Dress from Metalicus
* Shoes from Trenery (I was such a grown up when I bought these last week I took them immediately to be rubber soled and waterproofed. Go Grandma Smaggle!)
* Cardigan from Harem on Brunswick Street
* Coin necklace from Poppy Smaggle
* Earrings from Girlprops

I’ve been wanting a dress like this for ages so I let myself buy it yesterday. I will be eating baked beans for the rest of the month… but who cares? I look like a vanilla soft serve cone!

How was your weekend poppet?

Half a Sunday…

by Carly Jacobs

redbalc

Went to sleep at midnight and woke up at midday. Half the day was pleasantly wasted and it was totally worth it. Spent the afternoon Christmas shopping and sipping an iced soy latte. This evening I’m making chilli con carne for dinner and a muesli slice for Mr Smaggle. I horrified both Mr Smaggle and Mr Squiggle (his brother) by telling them that I’ve never seen Terminator so they are making me watch it tonight. I’ll let you know what I think…

* Skirt from Chin Chin

* Top from Country Road

* Shoes from Funkis

* Necklace from Mr Smaggle from MOMA in N.Y

 How was your weekend petal? Did you do anything exciting?

Oh and again I’m sorry to my Squiz card winners. Apparently they are having issues with their promotional email thing and will be sending the winners their vouchers as soon as this is fixed.
