o I just spent an hour writing, what I’d like to think was a rather lyrical and poetic post about how beautiful Italy is when all of a sudden the internet crapped out. No biggie. I have an auto-saver. I went back into the blog to retrieve my last draft and for some reason, that part of my blog has disappeared. It’s just gone. And so is the fabulous post and I’m really annoyed because I have to go eat cheese now and I don’t want to re-write the whole damn thing. So here are some photos I’ve taken of Italy to tide you over until I can write about my travels without wanting throw my lap top against a wall from auto-save malfunction rage. RAGE!!!!
The Colosseum. We waited outside in the scorching sun and it was blissfully cool and calm inside.
The Vatican. There are these little police cars that do constant circles of the foreground. It looks like the funnest job ever.
Just a random cobblestoned street because Rome. Everything looked like it had been dipped in marshmallows – just this beautiful rosey light everywhere.
This is one of the oldest cafes in Italy – we slammed a few cappuccinos here before doing a lap of The Pantheon. Across the road I had the most breathtaking peach gelato. It had chunks of peach in. For real, hands down best peach gelato ever.
Piazza Venezia. The detail on this building is spectacular. It’s places like this that are a good reminder that putting in the extra effort is worth it. People are always impressed by things that look difficult to do. I was having some good business thoughts as I wandered around.
My staple lunch.
The Colosseum. I honestly could have spent all day here. This is the underground area where they kept prisoners and animals before they came out to fight. It’s quite awful thinking about people casually watching men and animals fight to the death while they calming ate their picnics. It’s weird man.
Seeing flowing water on the street is quite stressful as a water saving Australian but it’s super convenient for filling up your water bottle.
Piazza Venezia. This horse is divine. I couldn’t stop looking at him.
The Pantheon. With a lovely group hug happening in the back ground.
My standard travel outfit. Comfy cotton dress, a scarf to protect my shoulders from the sun and my super comfy Merrells. I could climb mountains wearing this. I refuse to be anything but completely comfortable while exploring.

I used to live in the UK in my early 20s so have been to Italy many times (and we’re visiting again in September!). I love it… but I come from a mediterranean family so I have to admit that it’s like a whole country of my crazy family. But tomatoes are my favourite food ever and I could eat caprese salad all day. ^_^
If you want to keep the Italian vibe alive when you come home I recommend Penelope Green’s books: ‘When in Rome’, ‘See Naples and Die’ and ‘Girl By Sea’. I read them every summer. Ciao!

Oh that sounds perfect! I’m reading a really heavy book about murder at the moment so those will be welcome relief. I cannot believe the tomatoes here – I’m going to turn into a tomato!

If you can head down to the Amalfi coast and Pompeii. Life changer for me when I travelled through Italy. Where do you get your fab dresses? I’m sad to say I wore daggy Bonds trackies in Italy. Fashion nightmare!

Oh gosh all over the place! The coloured one is from country road, the grey one from Morrison. I also love Marrimekko! I wear little bike shorts under them too so it feels like I’m wearing active wear! I want to go to Pompeii but it will have to be next time!

I spent July 2005 based in Florence. Had a day in Rome when I first arrived, then train to Florence. Did a bus trip to Verona with others from the language schools to see Zeferelli’s Aida in the Roman amphitheatre there, and had a weekend in Siena midway through. Also have a couple of days in Bergamo with my son’s exchange family. But otherwise, spent the month in Florence – wonderful way to travel, to have a home base where you ‘live’ and have a routine and regular shopping and stuff. I feel as if I really know Florence now – would love to go back.

Oh Florence was definitely on the list but Italy is so dense we don’t have time to do everything! I want to do Tuscany too!

I was in Rome in 2002 – the thing that overwhelmed me most (as it did in most European cities) was the sheer oldness of everything, people casually hanging out in anicent structures where here in Australia, anything pre-1900 is our idea of “old”.

Oh lord yes! I’m from Canberra so it’s even worse for me – it’s only 100 years old! Practically everywhere is older than Canberra.

It’s funny because Italy has never been on my bucket list, that is – until I saw that perfect caprese salad on your instagram! But really though, your travel photos have really sold it for me. I really want to go now! Everything looks so beautiful, and that food you keep talking about sounds to die for.

Honestly, it was never on mine either and I feel like a right chump about it! It’s amazing. Can’t believe I left it so far down on my travel bucket list for so long.

I went to Italy for the first time this time last year, but only had just over 24 hours in Rome before we jumped on a boat to Greece. My boyfriend HATED Rome – I’ve realised it’s one of those cities that everyone either loves or hates – so I feel like I didn’t get as much from it with that charming thundercloud on my arm, but I loved the hours I had by myself before his later flight got in, exploring the Piazza Venezia and Roman Forum. The detail and history in everything is just breathtaking!

I loved Rome! I have heard that some people don’t like it though – I thought it was fascinating. It’s funny when people get weird about places isn’t it?

I was in Rome several years ago with my school. I loved how the Colosseum is right in the middle of the city. You get of the metro and BANG!! there it is!! love it I should really go back soon.
