How To Keep Healthy These Holidays with The Smaggle Salad-A-Day Challenge

ou know that gluggy feeling you get towards the end of the year? When you realise that the only green thing you’ve had in the last few days was an apple martini? I tend to get a bit busy and a bit crap at being healthy in December so this year I’ve created a salad-a-day challenge (#smagglesaladaday) to keep me on track with my healthy eating through out December and I thought make a list of salad prompts so you guys can join me. It’s a great way to make sure that you’re getting your essential serves of veggies in between all the mince pies and champagne! Here’s the list of prompts…

How to participate in the challenge

1. Save the list of prompts somewhere you’ll see it – in your phone, on your desk top or print it off and stick it to your fridge.

2. Use the daily prompt to inspire your salad of the day.

3. Snap a picture of your salad and upload it to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #smagglesaladaday and tag me @smaggle in your post.

That’s it!

Prompt help

I tried to make the prompts as inclusive as possible to make them achievable for people with dietary requirements so you can interpret them any way you choose but here’s a little help if you need it.

  1. Green – think leaves, broccoli, herbs, olives, green plates, green forks. Anything green!
  2. Fresh – go fresh today with leaf based salads, tomatoes, cucumber… anything fresh that floats your boat.
  3. Big – go big with a giant serve of fresh veggies, any kind you like!
  4. Crisp – think crispy today with noodles, capsicum, thin apple slices or toasted almonds.
  5. Red – apples, tomatoes, capsicum, pomegranate, chilli, red bowls and napkins.
  6. Nuts – go nuts! Literally.
  7. Snack – make a snack salad with carrot, celery or capsicum sticks, dips or a boiled egg.
  8. Dressing – dress your salad today to make it extra fancy.
  9. Herbs – mint, dill, basil, coriander – what’s your favourite herb?
  10. Seeds – sesame seeds, chia, pumpkin and sunflower seeds are your inspiration today.
  11. Warm – go with a warm salad today maybe chicken, pumpkin or potato?
  12. Protein – beef, chicken, tofu, chickpeas. Pick your favourite protein!
  13. Fruit – have a fruit salad today! Easy.
  14. Greek – think feta, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and cucumber.
  15. Grains – barley, buckwheat, millet, quinoa – even popcorn counts!
  16. Asian – think thinly sliced carrots, sweet sauces and crunchy noodles.
  17. Beans – green beans, cannellini beans and kidney beans are on the menu today.
  18. Orange – anything orange! Oranges, carrot, orange capsicum, sweet potato, pumpkin… smoked salmon?
  19. Summer – think summer salads with avocado or mango… anything summery.
  20. Rainbow – go with heaps of colour today – as many as you can fit on your plate!
  21. Cleansing – today’s prompt is all about being clean so go with lots of greens and cleansing ingredients.
  22. Vegetarian – bulk up on your veg today but add some tofu, beans or cheese.
  23. Quick – speedy and easy is the name of the game today.
  24. Power – include a power ingredient like blueberries, salmon or cranberries.
  25. Chocolate – It’s Christmas day so dump all your gifted chocolate in a bowl and make Chocolate Salad!
  26. Leftovers – make an awesome salad with all your Christmas leftovers.
  27. Mexican – think guacamole, salsa, cheese and taco spices.
  28. Light – lighten up today after Christmas overindulgence with something healthy.
  29. Favourite – have your most favourite salad in the world today.
  30. Raw – think crunchy, fresh and raw.
  31. Fancy – It’s New Years Eve so have something a little bit special today.

Just remember not to get too hung up on the prompts – the most important thing is to eat a salad a day!

Love this challenge. The only food I can tolerate at the moment is salad. I’ve been having green smoothies to mix things up. The tricky part for me, will be remembering to capture my salad moments.

Oh cool! Did she do prompts too? I haven’t seen salad prompts before but I’ll totally contact her – maybe we can collab on the next month! 🙂

    • Thanks Lisa 🙂

No prompts Carly, just eating a salad a day for the fun of it because I love salads!

I love your idea of prompts though. Maybe I could do the challenge in January? I’m a little challenged out but still eating salads because YUM!

yum! I started a day early with a delicious dinner salad. But I suspect salad is going to be much harder in this cold and snowy Canada 🙂 I might extend it to both soup and/or salad because warm food is definitely a priority this year.
Was just talking about how I miss summer Christmases in Oz.
