3 Manageable Ways To Get Your Shit Together In March

3 Manageable Ways To Get Your Shit Together In March
Carly Jacobs
L

ast month I set myself some hefty goals and participated in 5 different challenges. You can read about them here. At the end of the month I’m 2kg lighter, a shit load more toned, I feel bloody brilliant and my house is spotless. I’m on a giant self improvement high (Type A personality much?) so I decided to create 3 new challenges for March. They aren’t as intense as February’s challenges but because they’re so managable you should all be able to join in! These are the challenges I’m doing this month if you want to play along – let’s do this. Here are 3 manageable ways to get your shit together in March.

#futuremesaysthanks  Every day in March, I’m going to do something that Future Me will thank me for. It might be laying out my gym clothes before I go to bed, unpacking the dishwasher in the morning or making a big veggie bake for lunches on a Sunday. It will be a great way to motivate me to stay on top of things and keep my #minsgame house tidy! Want to join? Simply upload a photo of something future you will thank you for every day in March to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #futuremesaysthanks.

Overhead of essentials hipster woman.

#9pmscreenfreemarch  I went to Bali last year for a yoga retreat (it was amazing thanks for asking!) and my guru suggested going screen free at 9pm every evening to get a good nights sleep. I did this for a few months and slowly it got later and later and I naughtily slipped back into my old habits again. My new rule is that my phone goes on do not disturb mode at 9pm, the computer gets turned off and I’m not allowed to touch either until the next morning. I can’t be as strict about the TV because I live in a one bedroom apartment with my partner but I’m going to aim to be in bed and reading by 10pm every night. Want to join? Simply post a sign off at 9pm on Instagram or Facebook at 9pm each night in March with the hashtag #9pmscreenfreemarch.

#brightplatemarch  I generally try to eat salad every day but sometimes the best I can manage is some tomato and basil on protein toast. My rule for March is that I have to eat something bright every single day. It could be a salad, an apple, a green smoothie but it has be bright and vibrant. Want to join? Simply post a picture of your bright meal or snack and use the hashtag #brightplatemarch.

Are you doing any challenges this month? What self improvements would you like to make this March?

P.S  – Here are more places you can get Smaggled – Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin, Instagram, YouTube and the Smaggle weekly newsletter. Being Smaggled is a good thing by the way… a ‘smaggle’ is a cross between a smash and snuggle so it’s like getting a really epic hug with lots of nuzzling and squeezing.

Oh Smags, I LOVE the idea of screen free by 9PM! Could I do it, probably not, it will force me to be helluva lot more organised during the day!!

I think you could do it! I don’t nessessarily include TV in this mainly just computer/internet/phone. That’s a bit more manageable!

  2. Di 9 years ago

    Hello lovely one
    Of course I’m in !
The getting organised every night is a cinch for me !being ADD I learnt many decades ago that to survive being a working mum with 3 kids I had to have strategies to make life bearable . It’s just me and hubby now but I always set the breakfast / lunch prep up before bed and lay out my gym clothes for 6 am start ! Makes life calmer and stress free each morn !
Have a son who lives in Scotland and he comes on line about the time I’m heading for bed so I need to be online late so I can talk with him . I do try to get to bed by 10 with my book ( kindle) so I’m a hopeless case for that challenge .
My plan this month is to only buy/ eat Aussie food and products as much as I can ! I’m reading the labels on everything ! Buying as much locally sourced fruit/ veg and supporting Aussie industry ! No frozen or processed food so lots of bright colours on my plate !
I joined a quilting class few weeks ago to re ignite my pleasure of stitching and meet new lovely ladies . I intend to set aside time for sewing instead of vacant TV gazing !
Love all your simple challenges , makes it easy to keep good intentions rolling

Oh I’m doing the same thing! I’ve booked in for a private crochet class this week – when I switch off at 9pm I can crochet in front of the TV. I want to do some of Pip Lincolne’s blankets – I’ve lots of pregnant mates at the moment so I’m going to do crochet blankets for their kids. I love the Aussie produce one too! That’s great. Doing the Whole30 last month was great because I was only eating meat and veg I could get all my food from the farmers markets!

  3. Jessica 9 years ago

I love all three of these ideas, and will be participating as much as I can!

  4. clcorbi 9 years ago

I did the minimalism challenge along with you in February and I LOVED the result. I’m actually still getting rid of extra things 😉 Seriously–once you start decluttering it gets pretty addictive.

I’m exactly the same! Mr Smags isn’t quite on board but I’ve got my eye on his wardrobe….

  5. Lila 9 years ago

I love #futuremesaysthanks especially because when I’m tired and leave things for later I joke that future me is going to be pissed about it.
I also put my phone on do not disturb at night and absolutely love it.

I used to be a relief teacher for like 7 years and I worked on call – it was the actual worst. I’m so grateful that I work for myself now and can have my phone off during the night!

I’m in for the #futuremesaysthanks I’m back at Uni tomorrow so life will be nuts so 5 minutes the night before of something and cooking on the weekends really helps me stay on top! I’d love to hear how you managed in Feb doing the Whole30! xx

I’ll do a follow up post about it later today! I’ll amend the old one – I was almost perfet on whole30 but had a few little slip ups. Not major ones just like a bit of sugar free chocolate or a skim cap!

  7. OMG same wavelength – I am just about to launch a #fsfutureme hashtag on FB and IG after reading the Power of Habit!

    • Tamsin Howse 9 years ago

What does the fs stand for?

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

Yeah what does FS stand for? I haven’t read Power of Habit. Embarrassingly enough my insp for this was a Natalie Tran video on The Community Channel! She saves future Natalie some M ‘n’ Ms… my inspo is so low brow.

      • Oops sorry – FS = Flying Solo (I emailed you today – let me know if you didn’t get it x)

And totally read the Power of Habit. It’s inspired at least three blog posts … and counting!

  8. Tamsin Howse 9 years ago

Awesome idea! I was pretty impressed with your Feb challenges and wish I could have participated in them but was drowning without adding any challenges. These ones seem a bit more manageable and I will try to take part!

That’s what I thought! Im going to go hard one month and then easy the next for this year – I think I’ve also decided to not drink every second month this year! 🙂

  9. I Spy Plum Pie 9 years ago

Love it Smags! I always lay my clothes out the night before and I’m good at organising lunch for the week on a Sunday, but I could definitely get better at the rest of these things! I wanted to join you in Feb but I’ve been fighting a virus for pretty much a month now so everything additional got pushed aside unfortunately! Maybe it’s time to do the minimalist challenge for myself anyway!

      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

Oh totally the minimalist challenge is amazing! Total game changer.

  10. Bec @ The Plumbette 9 years ago

Love your challenges and it’s so awesome to read how your February ones went. My best intentions fell by he wayside. I like the future me hashtag. Anything to make life easier!

Totally! People get so grumpy about doing little jobs that will only help them in the end so it’s important to readjust your thinking with things like that!

  11. Sammie @ The Annoyed Thyroid 9 years ago

As usual, awesome ideas. I’m totes in with #brightplatemarch and while I’m not sure I can be screen free by 9pm (because if I am, my blog will be empty) I will try to be in bed by 10pm every day. Since the hubster had his stroke, we’ve both been working on our sleep hygeine, going to bed and getting up at the same time (every day, even at weekends) and it’s made a really (positive) difference! Here’s to a smag-tastic March! Now there’s a hashtag for you #smagtastic xx

      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

Ah! I love #smagtastic! Brilliant. I’m trying to get better with sleep hygeine – Mr Smags has business partners in Canada though so he has to be up till midnight to do a handover for them and we live in a 1 bedroom flat. I try my best but it can be a bit rough!

  12. MummaMcD 9 years ago

Some great challenges here Smags! I’m in for #brightplateMarch – we just got back from 2.5 weeks in NZ where fish & chips was an almost daily meal so I need to freshen up my insides!!

Oh lord definitely! You need to get some greens in those gills!

  13. Cosette 9 years ago

#9pmscreenfreemarch is an ongoing one for me. My goal is to go to bed at 9pm and read until sleep. This is tough with my partner who usually wants to watch a movie at 8pm. So, I’m trying to get him to start movies at 7pm or maybe go #10pmscreefree.

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

I’m trying my best to get my partner on board too but it’s difficult. I’m concentrating on phone/computer free at 9pm and TV free at 10pm.

  14. homebase5 9 years ago

Great idea! I’m going to join in (I’ve been reading The Power of Habit on Kelly’s recommendation – but can only guess what FSfutureme means – maybe For Sake of Future Me?). Anyway, slight variation – #1hreveningscreentime(allowing for kids stuffing around after their 8pm bedtime), #exercisedone (only six weeks until Oxfam trailwalker). Not very catchy titles (might need to work on them). #brightplatesmarch is a good one!

I haven’t read that but it sounds great! #futuremesaysthanks inspiration came from Natalie Tran from The Community Channel. It’s actually a comedy sketch. Weird right?

  15. Love all of these challenges – very doable indeed! And yes, I went screen-free after 9pm last year when I read you were doing it, however that’s blown out for me. Time to get it back on track!

      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

Me too! I was doing so well! Back on track today!

  16. Jamie 9 years ago

I love the idea of #futuremesaysthanks and is such a good challenge I may try to join in! When I was younger (not that much younger unfortunately!) and still making poor choices about drinking too much, staying out too late, etc. I’d always claim the results jokingly as “Future Carolyn’s problems”. This is a nice way to turn that on it’s head. (Even though the past was possibly more fun in the moment!)

      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

Oh totally! I used to do the same thing but I just can’t hack it anymore. I had a few glasses of wine on Sunday with a mate to celebrate the end of #febfast and I just feel it immediately. I’m thinking about doing alcohol free every second month for the whole year!

  18. jesse.anne.o 9 years ago

Ugh. I need the #futuremesaysthanks (right now that is not at all what she’s saying) and the #9pmscreenfree

    • Author
      Carly Jacobs 9 years ago

The 9pm screen free is ace! I’ve been carrying it through all the way to 9am. I have 12 screen free (TV excepted because my partner is a night owl!) and it’s been great!

  19. Alisa Muir 9 years ago

    Love these ideas.
After watching your goals last month I started the minimalist game this month.
I have tried in the past and failed to finish the month. But everything i get out of my house is a bonus.

I like salad but couldn’t eat it every day. Ok well I could if I was creative about it but that isn’t likely right now. But bright food I can so manage.

I LOVE the 9pm no screen thing. But I don’t have a tv to watch so I watch tv on my laptop. I already removed FB from my phone. But like the idea of putting it on do not disturb… I have been aiming for bed by 10. But will aim to actually close down web windows by 9. Watch an episode of tv then off to bed.

Future me says thanks is my fav.
I always put things off.. and right now my house and life is chaos.
    Time to change that.

Thanks for being all inspiring and shit.

Ha! Thank you so much! I just think there’s lots of manageable stuff that people can do get their lives sorted you know? The screen free thing is great – I don’t touch my computer or my phone between the hours of 9pm and 9 am. It’s so good!

  20. I love your bright plate – because I always try to make my plates bright and I am always a big fan of helping out future me so will be playing along with that too. Screen free is the one I most need to do but I. Just. Can’t …
Also, I send you a messenger message about your blogging course which may have ended up in a facebook junk folder or something. I don’t really know how messenger works… 🙂
