f you’re a total 90s tragic I’m hoping you’ve jumped on board with Sweet Teen Club. It’s a podcast by my mate Stacey Veggie Mama and I and it’s all about 90s pop culture – Sweet Valley High, Babysitters Club, butterfly hair clips, Impulse body spray, Heathers and Blossom. We debuted with 5 episodes about Sweet Valley High last week and this week we’ve taken a bit of a break and we’re deconstructing the cinematic masterpiece that is Clueless. To commemorate this momentous movie I’ve popped together a few facts about this 90s darling of a movie.

Photo 8-02-2016, 4 46 06 PM

1. Alicia Silverstone pronounces her name ‘Ah-lee-see-ya’ not ‘Ah-lee-sha’.

2. When Brittany Murphy said the line ‘You’re a virgin who can’t drive!’ – she actually was a virgin who couldn’t drive.

3. The director of the movie Amy Heckerling makes a cameo as one of Ms Geists bridesmaids.

4. The name of the actress of plays Ms Geist is Twink Caplan.

5. Reese Witherspoon auditioned for the part of Cher

Also I’ve done some sleuthing and I think Brecken Meyer (the guy who plays Travis) may well have dated someone very famous in high school… *cliff hanger*

I listened to half the intro on my morning commute 🙂 – I wonder if you guys ever read the ‘Girl Talk’ series? I was a SV kids and Teens girls, a little BSC, but also got my older cousins Girl Talk collection – best of both worlds as it was four girls. One thing I remembered from it was how to fix hair colour disasters

Yes, I did! I still have some! We’ll do an episode for sure. Thanks so much for listening!

Ohh I definitely read Girl Talk! Loved it! And Dolly fiction – it was the best. Anything trashy – that’s what I was all about!

Oh so many lines that make me smile in Clueless. However I think my all time favourite is (and I copied and pasted this – I am not that good!).

I would like to say this. Tardiness is not something you can do on your own. Many, many people contributed to my tardiness. I would like to thank my parents for never giving me a ride to school, the LA city bus driver who took a chance on an unknown kid and last but not least, the wonderful crew from McDonalds who spend hours making those egg McMuffins without which I might never be tardy.

I found this which is a brilliant summary of some of the most excellent lines … http://thoughtcatalog.com/nico-lang/2013/06/35-clueless-quotes-that-make-everyday-life-worth-living/

I adore that speech! I love the character of Travis! Also a well time ‘As if!’ works rather nicely too.

Wow. I have powered through the first 5 this evening driving to dinner and working out – I love how the only thing you criticize more than the BS plots of the OG books is the 2008/12 reboots! It is a really entertaining show and I like how short the episodes are.

I think I must have read more SV kids than Teens (although I do have a distinct SV Teen memory of a ghost amusement park…) because I DO NOT recall all this pre-sex activity!! I wonder what I missed in the kids series

As for Carly not being sure how to pronounce words, I do remember that I did not know how to say Lila Fowler (Lee-la/Lie-La) and I just always said ‘Flower’ in my head as her last name.

Yes! I never knew if it was Lie-la or Lee-la. Seriously the re-boots are amazing terrible. Totally worth reading.

    • Haha, I named my daughter Lila not thinking there would be any doubt in how to pronounce it (we say Lie-la) but LOADS of people have asked/assumed it’s Lee-la!

I pretty much lived by this in my teens: “Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie.”
Annnnd I’m fairly certain I can still quote the entire movie word for word. Tragic or genius – you decide!
