3 Totally Epic Ways To Eat Hot Cross Buns

was chatting to some friends the other day and we were talking about our favourite holidays. Everyone else said theirs was Christmas and I said mine was Easter. It sounds weird but every year, I very randomly have an amazing Easter. New Years Eve and Christmas are stressful and usually quite disappointing but there’s just something about that little mini-break at Easter that just always turns out awesome for me.

This year all I want is to cook dinner for my parentals who are visiting this year, drink some wine, play cards and obviously make a weird and cool dessert. I’ve teamed up with Woolies and Created with Jamie (lovely jubbly!) to bring you 3 dessert recipes using hot buns. Because they’re already awesome when they’re toasted and slathered in butter but there’s always room for improvement right? Here are 3 totally epic ways to eat hot cross buns.

Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Sandwiches

What You Need
What You Do
  1. Line a slice tin with baking paper, making sure each edge is covered. Using a spatula spread the ice cream in the base of the tin and layer it until the tin is full.
  2. Freeeze over night.
  3. The next day, lift the ice cream out of the tin and use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut circles of ice cream.
  4. Place the ice cream inside hot cross bun. Store in the freezer until ready to serve.

Hot Cross Bun French Toast

What You Need
What You Do
  1. Thinly cut hot cross buns into ‘slices’.
  2. Whisk egg, cinnamon and vanilla in a bowl.
  3. Dip hot cross bun slices into the egg mixture, sprinkle with caster sugar and then fry on each side in a fry pan until golden brown.
  4. Serve with fresh fruit and yogurt.

Ht Cross Bun Apple Crumble

What You Need
  • 6 Granny Smith apples cut into small cubes
  • ½ cup of caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
  • Cumble Topping
  • 1 packet of Created with Jamie Scrumptious Stem Ginger Hot Cross Buns, processed into bread crumbs
  • 200 gms unsalted butter
  • ½ cup of rolled oats
  • ½ cup of caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
What You Do
  1. Mix apple ingredients in a bowl until well combined and then place in a pie dish.
  2. Roughly chop hot cross buns and then whiz them in a food processor until they form crumbs.
  3. Mix processed hot cross buns with remaining topping ingredients and sprinkle on the apples in the pie dish.
  4. Bake in a 180 degree celsius oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Serve with ice cream.

 

Did you know that I used to hate ginger in sweet foods? Until my mate introduced me to Japanese ginger candy and I’ve been hooked ever since. So when I saw these at the shops I was like ‘What kind of a foodie genius puts ginger in hot cross buns???’. Brilliant. Jamie’s Scrumptious stem ginger hot cross buns are made with Aussie free range eggs and are created from Jamie’s own recipe.

They’re like a sweet and zesty little flavour explosion, kind of like very, very fancy fruit toast. You can eat them fresh (seriously how good are fresh doughy hot cross buns that don’t need toasting?) or you can toast them and slather them with butter and they’re just $5 a packet. Another option is to get all celebrity chef on the situation and make fancy desserts out of them. Obviously. These hot cross buns are available in Woolworths stores and online as part of the Woolies easter range.

P.S I once saw an advertisement years ago for a ginger company and their slogan was ‘Ginger. Nature’s gold.’ I always wondered how that got through the marketing team because gold is nature’s gold. Hilarious.

    These all look delicious, especially the crumble. I usually wangle a small gift or experience in lieu of chocolate because once I get cracking on those Easter eggs, I just can’t stop! Mini eggs or Lindt bunnies (and ideally, both) are my favourites! After reading this, I was thinking how yummy a Hot Cross Bun Bread Pudding would be? Have you ever tried bread pudding? It’s sooooo good and it was my nana’s speciality. It’s like a pud/cake with apple, sultanas, egg, cinnamon and bread (or in this case, buns) and it’s baked in the oven, and then can be eaten hot or cold. So much nom! If you serve any of these you’re sure to have a bun-tastic Easter!

      Oh my god the crumble was SO GOOD! It was all thick and delicious. I may or may not have eaten it the next day with yogurt for breakfast…

    I used to make hot cross buns when I had a bread maker. I love French toast, such a treat. I don’t eat bread now so no hc buns for us. But chocolate – that’s different. I have stashed away a few bags of Lindt bunnies, carrots and mini eggs. I am quite amazed that I havent raided the stash (they’ve been there for a month!). Looking forward to Easter because I am having the week before off work and using the Ikatan Day Spa voucher my son gave me for Christmas – 3 hours of facial, massage, pedi – Heaven! Xx

      I’m not a bread eater either but if you add dried fruit and cinnamon and butter I find it VERY hard to resist. I’m the same with croissants. I just can’t help myself.

    I can’t believe it’s Easter in a few weeks!!!!! SHITE!
    We move house next Saturday and then I’ll be able to get into the Easter Spirit. And these recipes will be referred to 😉

    I once worked with a lovely Irish lady who would buy fresh hot cross buns, open them up and slide fresh green seedless grapes inside. Sounds weird but actually its delicious. The juicy burst of goodness is a delightful surprise

      Wow that sounds amazing. I love it when you see people do weird stuff like that. I have mates who pepper on strawberries and it’s surprisingly amazing.

    You make a really good point about the relaxing nature of Easter – much more low-key and I always seem to enjoy myself, too. I still prefer Christmas overall though, maybe I’m addicted to the crazy?
    I adore your posts with Woolies, so inspiring! I’m not sure if I’ll love the ginger in these, but Papa Bovary likes a good hit of ginger so I’m going to buy him these and snaffle a bit to try! I will definitely be trying that Hot Cross Bun French Toast – genius I tell you, genius!

      Oh that’s so lovely to hear! They are very hard work these posts but I love doing them… Mr Smags and I make quite the cooking/styling/photography team! The French toast was SO GOOD! I need to make it GF for Smags so he doesn’t miss out!

    All sorts of delicious awesomeness happening right here. Why is the hot cross bun season so short?!

    Have you ever tried pushing a small chocolate egg in the middle of your bun before popping it in the oven. Then you chop it in half and top with slices of fresh strawberry. Yum!
